活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)是(shi)一(yi)種(zhong)經特(te)殊處(chu)理的(de)(de)(de)(de)炭(tan)，將有機原料(liao)（果殼、煤、木(mu)材等）在(zai)隔絕空(kong)氣(qi)的(de)(de)(de)(de)條件下加熱(re)，以減少非(fei)碳(tan)成分(fen)（此過程(cheng)稱(cheng)為炭(tan)化），然后與(yu)氣(qi)體反(fan)應，表(biao)面被侵蝕，產生微孔(kong)發達的(de)(de)(de)(de)結構 （此過程(cheng)稱(cheng)為活(huo)(huo)化）。由于(yu)活(huo)(huo)化的(de)(de)(de)(de)過程(cheng)是(shi)一(yi)個微觀過程(cheng)，即大量的(de)(de)(de)(de)分(fen)子碳(tan)化物表(biao)面侵蝕是(shi)點狀侵蝕 ，所以造(zao)成了活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)面具有無數細小孔(kong)隙。活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)面的(de)(de)(de)(de)微孔(kong)直徑(jing)大多在(zai)2～50nm之間，即使是(shi)少量的(de)(de)(de)(de)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)，也(ye)有巨大的(de)(de)(de)(de)表(biao)面積，每克活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)(de)表(biao)面積為500~1500m2，活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)(de)一(yi)切應用(yong)，幾(ji)乎都基(ji)于(yu)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)(de)這一(yi)特(te)點。
