活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)是一(yi)種經(jing)特殊處(chu)理的(de)(de)(de)炭(tan)，將有(you)(you)機(ji)原(yuan)料（果(guo)殼、煤、木(mu)材等(deng)）在(zai)隔(ge)絕空氣(qi)的(de)(de)(de)條件下加熱，以減少非碳成(cheng)分（此過程稱為炭(tan)化(hua)），然(ran)后與氣(qi)體反應，表(biao)(biao)(biao)面被侵蝕，產生微孔發達的(de)(de)(de)結(jie)構(gou) （此過程稱為活(huo)(huo)化(hua)）。由于(yu)活(huo)(huo)化(hua)的(de)(de)(de)過程是一(yi)個微觀過程，即大(da)量的(de)(de)(de)分子碳化(hua)物(wu)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面侵蝕是點狀侵蝕 ，所(suo)以造成(cheng)了活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面具有(you)(you)無數細小孔隙(xi)。活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面的(de)(de)(de)微孔直徑大(da)多在(zai)2～50nm之(zhi)間，即使是少量的(de)(de)(de)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)，也有(you)(you)巨大(da)的(de)(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面積，每克活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面積為500~1500m2，活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)一(yi)切應用，幾乎都(dou)基于(yu)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)這一(yi)特點。
