活(huo)性炭(tan)是(shi)一(yi)種經特殊處(chu)理的(de)(de)炭(tan)，將有機原料（果殼、煤、木材等(deng)）在(zai)隔絕空(kong)氣的(de)(de)條件下加熱，以減少非(fei)碳成分(fen)（此過程(cheng)(cheng)(cheng)稱為炭(tan)化(hua)），然后(hou)與(yu)氣體反(fan)應，表(biao)(biao)面被侵蝕，產生(sheng)微(wei)孔發(fa)達的(de)(de)結構(gou) （此過程(cheng)(cheng)(cheng)稱為活(huo)化(hua)）。由于(yu)(yu)活(huo)化(hua)的(de)(de)過程(cheng)(cheng)(cheng)是(shi)一(yi)個微(wei)觀過程(cheng)(cheng)(cheng)，即大(da)量的(de)(de)分(fen)子碳化(hua)物表(biao)(biao)面侵蝕是(shi)點狀侵蝕 ，所以造(zao)成了(le)活(huo)性炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)面具(ju)有無數細(xi)小孔隙。活(huo)性炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)面的(de)(de)微(wei)孔直徑大(da)多在(zai)2～50nm之間，即使(shi)是(shi)少量的(de)(de)活(huo)性炭(tan)，也有巨大(da)的(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)面積，每(mei)克活(huo)性炭(tan)的(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)面積為500~1500m2，活(huo)性炭(tan)的(de)(de)一(yi)切(qie)應用，幾乎都基于(yu)(yu)活(huo)性炭(tan)的(de)(de)這一(yi)特點。
