活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)是(shi)一種(zhong)經特(te)殊處理的(de)(de)(de)炭(tan)，將有(you)機原料（果殼、煤、木(mu)材(cai)等）在(zai)隔絕空氣的(de)(de)(de)條(tiao)件(jian)下加熱，以減(jian)少非碳(tan)(tan)成(cheng)分（此(ci)(ci)過程(cheng)稱為炭(tan)化），然后與氣體反應(ying)，表(biao)(biao)(biao)面被侵(qin)蝕(shi)(shi)，產生微孔發達的(de)(de)(de)結構 （此(ci)(ci)過程(cheng)稱為活(huo)化）。由(you)于活(huo)化的(de)(de)(de)過程(cheng)是(shi)一個微觀過程(cheng)，即大量的(de)(de)(de)分子碳(tan)(tan)化物表(biao)(biao)(biao)面侵(qin)蝕(shi)(shi)是(shi)點狀侵(qin)蝕(shi)(shi) ，所以造成(cheng)了活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面具有(you)無數細(xi)小孔隙。活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面的(de)(de)(de)微孔直(zhi)徑大多在(zai)2～50nm之間，即使是(shi)少量的(de)(de)(de)活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)，也(ye)有(you)巨大的(de)(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面積，每(mei)克活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)表(biao)(biao)(biao)面積為500~1500m2，活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)一切應(ying)用，幾(ji)乎都基(ji)于活(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)的(de)(de)(de)這一特(te)點。
