活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)是(shi)一(yi)種經特殊處(chu)理(li)的(de)(de)炭(tan)(tan)，將有機原料(liao)（果殼、煤、木材等）在隔絕空氣(qi)的(de)(de)條(tiao)件下(xia)加熱，以減少非碳(tan)成分（此(ci)過(guo)程(cheng)稱(cheng)為(wei)炭(tan)(tan)化），然后與氣(qi)體反應，表面被侵(qin)蝕，產生微(wei)(wei)(wei)孔(kong)發達的(de)(de)結構 （此(ci)過(guo)程(cheng)稱(cheng)為(wei)活(huo)(huo)化）。由于(yu)活(huo)(huo)化的(de)(de)過(guo)程(cheng)是(shi)一(yi)個微(wei)(wei)(wei)觀過(guo)程(cheng)，即大(da)量(liang)的(de)(de)分子(zi)碳(tan)化物表面侵(qin)蝕是(shi)點狀侵(qin)蝕 ，所(suo)以造成了(le)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)表面具有無數細(xi)小(xiao)孔(kong)隙(xi)。活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)表面的(de)(de)微(wei)(wei)(wei)孔(kong)直(zhi)徑大(da)多(duo)在2～50nm之間(jian)，即使是(shi)少量(liang)的(de)(de)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)，也有巨大(da)的(de)(de)表面積，每克活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)的(de)(de)表面積為(wei)500~1500m2，活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)的(de)(de)一(yi)切應用，幾乎都基于(yu)活(huo)(huo)性(xing)炭(tan)(tan)的(de)(de)這一(yi)特點。
